The Second Harvests program aims to glean good food, that would otherwise not be used, and connect to those who can best benefit. Harvests are split three ways between the grower/land-owner, volunteer pickers and the community. Food harvested is distributed through the local schools, the Golden Town Outreach Food Bank and other community food programs. Some of the produce collected is processed into value-added products, such as apple sauce, which is shared amongst volunteers, distributed through community food programs and sold through local markets.
Our area is teeming with old unmanaged apple orchards free of sprays, and much of what we seek are September and October volunteer harvesters and food processors to preserve the abundance.
Contact Ivan or Simona at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information and/or if you have and/or know where there is food to be gleaned and/or if you are interested in getting involved.
We are also (occasionally) on Facebook as the Grey Bruce Food Gleaning Group.
